On this two weeks trip through Morocco, you will discover the country’s highlights and immerse yourself in Morocco’s history and oriental life. The attractive royal cities of Rabat, Meknes, Fez and Marrakech each reveal an extraordinary history and culture. You will be fascinated by the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas and the vastness of the Erg Chegaga desert. A breathtaking sunset and Berber music around the campfire await you on this tour. The history of the former Pasha of Marrakech and southern Morocco, El-Glaoui, is also part of the tour. You will visit the most famous kasbah in Morocco, Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and enjoy the enchanting landscapes and endless, barren desert landscapes.

Itinerary

You fly to Morocco and land at Marrakech airport, where you will be warmly welcomed by your tour guide and taken to your accommodation. Use the rest of the day to relax or go on an initial exploration tour on your own or with a local city guide.

The city tour in Marrakech is undoubtedly a highlight of your stay. You will be accompanied by a local German-speaking guide. Marrakech is home to important cultural monuments such as the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, the enchanting Saadian tombs, the Menara water basin and the city wall. The special attraction is the lively hustle and bustle of the souks and the famous Djemaa El Fnaa square, where acrobats, storytellers, snake charmers and musicians come together. This city tour ends at midday and you say goodbye to your tour guide.

This day’s journey takes you to Casablanca, where you will visit the magnificent Hassan II Mosque. You will then continue your journey to Rabat, where you can explore the fascinating sights of the city with a local guide: the historic site of Chellah (outside visit), the Hassan Tower and the Kasbah Oudaya.

After a leisurely breakfast in the riad, discover the sights of the city of Rabat with a local guide (Chellah (from the outside), Tour Hassan and the Kasbah Oudaya). Then continue through the Rif Mountains to the blue city of Chefchaouen in the north of the country. Situated between two large peaks, Chefchaouen sometimes looks like a romantic little town with blue and whitewashed, narrow, tall houses nestled in terraces on the mountain slopes. You will spend the night here in a hotel or riad.

Today you will explore Chefchaouen and immerse yourself in the old medina with its cobblestone streets and steep alleyways. Nestled between majestic peaks, Chefchaouen looks like a romantic little town, with its blue and whitewashed, narrow and tall houses nestled picturesquely against the mountain slopes. After exploring the town, it’s time for a mint tea. From a café terrace, you can enjoy the wonderful view of the central square Outa el Hamam and the impressive Tarik-Ben-Ziad mosque.

After breakfast, departure to the Roman city of Volubilis, whose ruins you can visit in detail. Then it’s on to Meknes, the city lies on a fertile plateau and is known for its 40 km long city wall with its magnificent city gates, as well as for its beautiful authentic souks. It is well worth visiting the medina here with what is probably the most beautiful gate in Morocco, the “Bab El Mansour”. Another place of interest is the Mellah, the Jewish quarter. The former royal stables of Moulay Ismail and the old granary impress with their well-thought-out architecture. Afterwards, the journey continues towards Fès, the oldest of Morocco’s royal cities.

After your breakfast, you will meet your guide to explore the beautiful and winding labyrinths of the old town of Fès, with its narrow streets and souks. Fès is the oldest of the four royal cities and a center for arts and crafts as well as the heart of Arab-Moroccan culture. First, you will get an overview of the provincial capital, which has a population of around 1.1 million. From the Borj Sud fortress, you have a magnificent view of the medina of Fès El Bali, which lies in a basin. Southwest of it, on a high plateau, is the district of Fès El Djedid, which was founded by the Merinids. Your exploration tour begins at the imposing royal palace. The route then continues into the medina, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. You will visit the former Koranic school Bou Inania and pass the mausoleum of the city’s founder Idris II. The route then leads to the Kairaouine complex in the heart of the old town, where up to 8,000 students of theology and Islamic law of the Merinid era once studied. Although the academic importance of the building is almost forgotten, today El Kairaouine functions as the main mosque of Fès and offers space for 22,000 worshippers. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Relax in your accommodation or stroll through the souks.

Today the route leads towards the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and Azrou to Midelt. First you pass farmland and orchards before driving through the sparse cedar forests of the Middle Atlas. Near Azrou, you have the opportunity to take a break and, with a bit of luck, spot a few macaques. This area is also popular with winter sports enthusiasts. The journey continues south and the landscape gradually becomes drier and more barren, but retains its beauty. After lunch in Midelt, you continue your journey through the enchanting Ziz Valley, along the historic trade route that takes you to Erg Chebbi, where you will experience the highest dunes in the south. You will spend the night in a desert camp with luxury facilities including private shower and toilet.

Enjoy the breathtaking sunrise in the desert and a delicious breakfast before you set off again and leave the desert behind you. The journey takes you towards Tinjedad, where you have the opportunity to visit an ethnographic museum and immerse yourself in the fascinating local culture. You will then continue your journey to Tinghir, where you will explore the majestic Todra Gorge and spend the night.

In the morning, you will make your way to the Dades Gorge and during the drive to the Rose Valley, you will have the opportunity to visit a nomadic family – if they are still there. The journey continues through the green valley of Mgoun and along the idyllic village of Bou Tharar with its historic kasbahs. Via the Road of 1000 Kasbahs, you finally reach the town of Kelaat Mgouna, known as the Rose City of Morocco, famous for the production of rose water and rose oil. In the afternoon, you will reach the clay town of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will take a walk through the village and spend the night in a Kasbah hotel.

After a relaxed breakfast, we continue our journey along the picturesque Ounila Valley, which impresses with its green oases, olive trees and numerous date palms. During our drive to Marrakech, we make a stop to visit the historic Pasha residence Kasbah Telouet. The route then takes us through the majestic Atlas Mountains over the Tizi n Tichka Pass at an altitude of 2260 meters back to Marrakech.

You will be picked up at the riad 3 hours before your departure and driven to Marrakech airport. We say goodbye to you and say “Beslama” and see you next time in Morocco.
