You will be amazed by the snow-capped mountains of the High Atlas and the vastness of the desert. A magnificent sunset and Berber music around the campfire are waiting to be experienced on this trip.
Also about the history of the former Pasha of Marrakech and southern Morocco El-Glaoui. Visit the most famous Kasbah in Morocco, Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and enjoy the magical landscapes and endless barren desert landscapes.
You fly to Morocco. At Marrakech airport you will be warmly welcomed by your tour guide. Then continue on the highway to Rabat. In Rabat you will spend the night in a riad in the medina of Rabat with breakfast and dinner.
After breakfast, meeting with a local guide and visit of the most important sights of the city of Rabat, (Chellah (from outside), Tour Hassan and Kasbah Oudaya). Then continue to Meknes, the city lies on a fertile plateau and is known for its 40 km long city wall with its magnificent city gates, as well as for its beautiful, authentic souks. It is well worth visiting the medina here with what is probably the most beautiful gate in Morocco, the “Bab El Mansour”. Another place of interest is the Mellah, the Jewish quarter. The former royal stables of Moulay Ismail and the old granary impress with their well-thought-out architecture.
Then continue to Fes, where you will be warmly welcomed with a mint tea in your Riad/Hotel. You can explore the old medina of Fes on your own or relax in your Riad/Hotel.
Distance: approx. 220 km
Travel time: approx. 4 hours
Meals: (F/A)
After breakfast meeting with the city guide, you will discover the beautiful intricate labyrinths of the Old Medina, with its narrow streets and souks.
Fès is the oldest of the four royal cities, the country’s center of arts and crafts and the heart of Arab-Moroccan culture. You will first get an overview of the provincial capital, which has around 1.1 million inhabitants. From the Borj Sud fortress, you have a good view of the medina called Fès El Bali, which is located in a basin.
Southwest of it, on a high plateau, is the district of Fès El Djedid, founded by the Merinids (a medieval Berber dynasty). Your exploration tour starts at the imposing royal palace. You then continue into the medina, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. You will take a look inside the former Koranic school Bou Inania and pass the mausoleum of the city’s founder Idris II. Continue to the Kairaouine complex in the heart of the old town. In Merinid times, up to 8,000 students studied theology and Islamic law here. Today, the building’s scholarly past has almost been forgotten; El Kairaouine is now the main mosque of Fès with space for 22,000 worshippers. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Relax in your accommodation or stroll through the souks.
Today we head towards the Middle Atlas via Ifrane, also known as “small Switzerland”, to Midelt. First you pass farmland and orchards, then through the sparse cedar forests of the Middle Atlas. Near the village of Azrou, you can stretch your legs and, with a bit of luck, spot a few macaques. The area around Azrou is also very popular with winter sports enthusiasts. The route continues southwards and the landscape slowly becomes drier and more barren, but this in no way diminishes its beauty. After lunch in Midelt, continue along the beautiful Ziz Valley, following the old trade caravan route to Erg Chebbi. There we encounter the highest dunes in the south. Overnight stay in a kasbah in Merzouga
Today we drive through the Hamada (stony desert) to a Berber nomad family in the desert, where we can drink a sweet mint tea and take a look at the life of the desert nomads.
We then continue to Khamlia, a small village on the edge of the desert where the Gnawa ethnic group lives. The Gnawa originally come from Central Africa and were brought to Morocco as slaves.
We will visit this Gnawa music group to better understand why Gnawa music is internationally recognized, as the soulful melodies blend classical Islamic music with African beats!
Our lunch will be the famous Berber pizza(stuffed pizza). Then a short drive into the depths of the Sahara, where our camp is located at the fascinating dunes of Erg Chebbi.
In the evening and before sunset, you will enjoy a fast ride with the quads from the camp over the sand dunes, with countless incredible impressions.
A delicious dinner with Berber music is also ready to be experienced in the desert.
Overnight stay in a luxury camp in the desert.
You enjoy the sunrise and a delicious breakfast before you leave the desert and head towards Tinghir. Today you drive an extraordinary route to the Todra gorges with many old villages, small oases and special rock formations. Arrival in Tinghir and overnight stay in a Kasbah in Tinghir.
After a leisurely breakfast, drive to the Dades Valley, where you will go on a beautiful hike through the Dades Valley with your guide today. You will hike through vast landscapes of red stone, gorges, fig trees, olive trees and many palm trees. In the afternoon you have time to relax in the hotel with pool.
After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, drive to Ait Ben Haddou and on the way to the Rose Valley you will have the opportunity to visit a nomadic family.
The journey continues through the green valley of Mgoun, with its old kasbahs, and via the road of 1000 kasbahs you reach the town of Kelaat Mgouna. It is known as the rose city of Morocco and rose water and rose oil are produced here.
You then continue to the desert town of Ouarzazate, also known as the “Hollywood of Morocco”, where you will spend the night in a riad.
Today’s program includes a beautiful hike to the oasis of Fint, a picture-book oasis. It consists of four traditional villages and enchants with a green palm grove and numerous colorful plants and native animals in the middle of the desert. This place has also been the backdrop for films such as “Prince of Persia” and “Babel”. After a moderate hike through the oasis, you will immerse yourself in the lifestyle of a local family, who will invite you into their home for a hot mint tea and a small lunch snack (approx. 10 km, walking time: approx. 3 hours, +200/-100 m elevation gain). Afterwards, you continue back to Aid Benhaddou. In the afternoon, you can explore the well-preserved 11th century town or spend a relaxing afternoon at your hotel.
After breakfast you will drive along the beautiful Ounila valley with its green oases, olive trees and many date palms to Marrakech. On your way you will visit the old Pasha residence Kasbah Telouet(outside visit, the kasbah was affected by the last earthquake). Afterwards you will drive through the Atlas Mountains over the Tizi n Tichka (2260m) back to Marrakech.
The city tour of Marrakech is certainly one of the highlights of your stay in Marrakech. A local German-speaking guide is available for this purpose. Marrakech has numerous important cultural monuments, such as the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, the enchanting Saadian tombs, the Menara water basin and the city wall. The special attraction lies in the colorful life in the souks and on the famous square “Djemaa El Fnaa”, where acrobats, storytellers, snake charmers and musicians meet. This city tour will end at noon and you will say goodbye to your tour guide.
Today you can decide whether you want to spend the day in Marrakech or take a short trip from Marrakech to the fantastically designed “Anima Garden” by Austrian artist André Heller. In our opinion, this is an absolute highlight among all the beautiful gardens in Marrakech.
Another gem in the immediate vicinity of the “Anima Garden” is the “Paradis du Safran”. Christine Ferrari from Switzerland grows saffron here, holds saffron seminars and has a large organic garden in which she grows countless medicinal plants and herbs. There is also a restaurant where products from the garden are served. Here you can really indulge in culinary delights!
In the afternoon you return to Marrakech and have the opportunity to enjoy a hammam with massage.
You will be picked up at the riad 3 hours before your departure and driven to Marrakech airport. We say goodbye to you and say “Beslama” and see you next time in Morocco.
